OIST Spins Out Surzen for Peptide-Based Opioid Adjunct
Surzen Biotherapeutics, a new biotech startup emerging from Japan’s Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology (OIST) Graduate University, has launched with patented peptide technology designed to make opioid pain relief safer and more effective. Announced on 18 August 2026, the company aims to develop peptide co-therapies that block opioid receptor dimerization, potentially reducing the addiction, respiratory depression and overdose risks that have driven the global opioid crisis.
Traditional opioid drugs target individual opioid receptor proteins (monomers). Recent research indicates these proteins frequently form dimers (two receptor molecules bonded together), a process associated with the side effects of opioid therapies. Chief Technology Officer Dr Peng Zhou used single-molecule tracking techniques in Professor Akihiro Kusumi’s Membrane Cooperativity Unit at OIST to study opioid receptor dimerization, and his team identified peptides that can selectively block dimerization. When co-administered with traditional opioids, these peptides are designed to reduce tolerance, improve efficacy and reduce severe side effects.
Surzen was assembled through OIST Innovation’s technology development and commercialisation hub, with Zhou awarded a Technology Pioneer Fellowship from the OIST Proof of Concept Program. Seed funding was provided by Saisei Ventures, and Venture Partner James Feliciano became the startup’s CEO. Surzen has also secured a grant from the Okinawa Prefectural Government under the Okinawa Advanced Medical Technology Infrastructure Development Promotion Program. The company is developing its technology primarily for US and Canadian markets, where prescription opioid overdoses caused more than 300,000 US deaths between 1999 and 2023 according to the US CDC.
The commercial signal is a rapidly heating global non-opioid and safer-opioid pain management category driven by the ongoing opioid crisis. Peptide-based adjuncts represent a differentiated approach versus the dominant novel non-opioid analgesic trajectory. Expect Vertex Pharmaceuticals (Journavx), Nektar Therapeutics and other pain management specialists to monitor Surzen’s development closely, with commercial validation likely dependent on Phase I clinical readouts.
