Pitt Study Maps Sex Differences in US Oral Conditions

30th September 2026

A large-scale US retrospective study drawing on approximately 5 million electronic health records has identified significant sex-related differences across many dental, oral and craniofacial conditions, highlighting the need for more personalised approaches to oral health prevention and treatment. Published on 23 September 2026 in the October issue of Clinical and Experimental Dental Research, the study extends personalised medicine research into a dental market historically dominated by population-level treatment approaches.

The research analysed electronic health record data from 254,700 adults in the US National Institutes of Health All of Us research programme, alongside approximately 4.7 million records from the BigMouth Dental Data Repository, comparing more than 200 dental, oral and craniofacial diseases between males and females. Strong female associations were observed for recurrent aphthous stomatitis, xerostomia, disorders affecting tooth development, dental abscess, reversible pulpitis and some forms of periodontitis. Strong male biases were observed for generalised and localised moderate periodontitis, tooth loss due to periodontal disease, pit-and-fissure caries and oral malignancies. Findings were not always consistent between databases, with 8 of 20 common diagnostic terms showing opposite directions of sex bias.

The authors suggested that biological mechanisms including differences in immune responses, hormones and sex-specific genetic factors could contribute to some observed differences, alongside behavioural and environmental factors. The findings support more targeted approaches to prevention, diagnosis and treatment across the growing personalised dentistry category. The commercial signal spans xerostomia products (Bausch Health’s Biotène), periodontal disease treatment infrastructure (Dentsply Sirona, Straumann), preventive oral care (Colgate-Palmolive, Procter & Gamble, GlaxoSmithKline) and AI-driven diagnostic platforms (Pearl, Overjet, VideaHealth).

The commercial signal is a maturing personalised dentistry category where biological sex-based diagnostic and preventive positioning is emerging alongside broader precision medicine trends. Xerostomia, periodontitis and oral cancer diagnostic markets particularly benefit. Expect Colgate-Palmolive, Procter & Gamble, GlaxoSmithKline, Bausch Health (Biotène), Dentsply Sirona, Straumann, and AI-diagnostic specialists Pearl, Overjet and VideaHealth to sharpen demographic-tailored positioning through 2027.
