Roche Lands FDA Clearance for cobas eplex RP3

5th November 2026

Roche Diagnostics has secured FDA clearance for its cobas eplex respiratory pathogen panel 3 (cobas eplex RP3), a multiplex molecular test detecting up to 19 viral and bacterial targets from a single nasopharyngeal swab in under two hours. Reported on 3 November 2026, the clearance builds on the earlier emergency-use-authorised cobas eplex RP2 and positions Roche for broader US commercial adoption across hospital laboratories and emergency departments ahead of the 2026-2027 respiratory season.

The cobas eplex RP3 runs on Roche’s automated cobas eplex system and simultaneously detects up to 19 pathogens, including respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), influenza and SARS-CoV-2. Results are delivered in under two hours, supporting rapid clinical decision-making across emergency departments, inpatient wards and ambulatory settings. Dan Malarek, CEO and President of Roche Diagnostics North America, framed the clearance around enabling timely, accurate testing that can guide life-saving interventions and give laboratories the range of testing choices they need. Roche positions the panel as supporting reduced unnecessary antibiotic use and lower follow-on testing and imaging volumes, with downstream health system cost implications.

The clearance extends Roche’s broader respiratory diagnostics line, which also includes UC-TIB-Respi-Bac-4, UC-TIB-NTM and cobas Influenza A/B & RSV. Per GlobalData, Roche led the global IVD market by 2025 revenue with more than $5bn in sales, with the broader IVD segment forecast to grow at a 3.1% CAGR to reach $60.6bn by 2035. The multiplex respiratory pathogen panel category has moved from pandemic-driven emergency use toward permanent commercial positioning as US hospitals look to consolidate seasonal and endemic respiratory infection workflows under single-run panels, reducing laboratory hands-on time and improving turnaround economics. RSV surveillance has become particularly prominent following the maturation of maternal and adult RSV vaccines and monoclonal antibody prophylaxis, with molecular diagnostic confirmation central to treatment pathway decisions.

The commercial signal is a maturing US multiplex respiratory pathogen diagnostics category where permanent FDA clearance, rapid turnaround times and broad panel coverage are reshaping hospital laboratory procurement economics. 2026-2027 respiratory season adoption anchors near-term commercial momentum. Expect sustained investment in multiplex respiratory molecular diagnostics and continued expansion of panel pathogen coverage through 2027 and 2028.
