Shimadzu, Axio BioPharma Partner on AI Media Optimisation

6th November 2026

Shimadzu Corporation has launched a collaboration with Wisconsin-based biotech Axio BioPharma to apply AI-driven cell culture media optimisation to antibody therapeutic development. Announced on 5 November 2026, the partnership pairs Shimadzu’s CellTune Ver. 2 software and Media Blending Kit with Axio’s antibody expression and evaluation platform, extending Shimadzu’s commercial reach into the growing North American biopharma services market and sharpening competitive positioning across AI-driven bioprocessing workflows.

Shimadzu’s CellTune Ver. 2 is an AI-based software platform that proposes optimal conditions, including media formulations and culture environments, from experimental data, with the Media Blending Kit enabling rapid preparation of the proposed formulations. Axio BioPharma runs an experimental platform for evaluating antibody expression and validating culture conditions. The partners will operate an iterative optimisation loop in which Axio’s laboratory tests and evaluates conditions proposed by Shimadzu’s AI, feeding results back into the design of subsequent experimental rounds. Shimadzu will use the project to assess how practical the media optimisation workflow is and refine its solutions for R&D and manufacturing process development.

Cell culture media selection and formulation have substantial downstream impact on biopharmaceutical productivity, quality and cost, with media development historically dependent on individual researcher experience. The AI-driven workflow replaces heuristic optimisation with data-driven iteration, with potential efficiency gains particularly relevant for growing antibody therapeutic and cell and gene therapy (CGT) development pipelines. Shimadzu has signalled continued partnering ambitions with both Japanese and international collaborators, with an explicit priority on expanding its North American commercial footprint. The partnership extends Shimadzu’s broader bioprocessing workflow strategy following recent US and European collaborations and positions the company within the maturing AI-driven biopharma CMC and process development market. Antibody therapeutic and CGT demand continues to expand, with commercial-scale media costs increasingly scrutinised against platform efficiency and quality metrics.

The commercial signal is a maturing AI-driven biopharma process development category where cell culture media optimisation is shifting from heuristic to data-driven workflows, with significant implications for manufacturing economics across antibody therapeutic and cell and gene therapy pipelines. North American commercial positioning anchors Shimadzu’s near-term growth strategy. Expect sustained investment in AI-driven bioprocess optimisation and continued partnership activity across the biopharma services market through 2027 and 2028.
