Thermo Fisher Debuts Orbitrap-Based Isotope Ratio MS System
Thermo Fisher Scientific has launched Orbitrap Isora, its first Orbitrap-based mass spectrometer platform for isotope ratio analysis, aiming to move a technique traditionally confined to specialist isotope labs into mainstream analytical workflows. Announced on 25 August 2026, the launch introduces two instrument tiers (Orbitrap Isora MS and Orbitrap Isora Pro MS) alongside the Vanquish Duo UHPLC system and a new Isotope Discoverer Software package for a fully integrated IRMS workflow.
The core innovation is methodological rather than purely instrumental. Conventional IRMS requires converting a sample into a simple gas before measurement, discarding structural information in the process. The new Orbitrap Isora workflow measures isotope ratios directly from intact molecular ions using electrospray ionisation coupled with high-resolution accurate-mass detection, capturing multiple isotopologues in a single run and potentially resolving position-specific isotope information. The Orbitrap Isora MS delivers up to 240K resolution at m/z 200, while the Pro version reaches 480K. Isotope Discoverer Software consolidates isotope ratio extraction, data filtering and correction, collapsing a process that previously took days of manual data handling into hours.
Dieter Hofmann, VP and General Manager of Applied Analytical Technologies at Thermo Fisher, framed the launch as an accessibility play designed to put powerful isotope insights in the hands of more scientists across health, environmental and planetary science research. Applications span PFAS and other environmental contaminant tracing, historical oxygen level reconstruction in geology and climatology, bioscience nutrient metabolism research and food adulteration detection. The company positions Orbitrap-based IRMS as complementary to its existing classical IRMS instrumentation.
The commercial signal is a substantive expansion of the isotope ratio mass spectrometry category beyond specialist labs into the mainstream analytical mass spec market. Molecular-level isotope resolution opens new commercial opportunities across environmental, food safety and bioscience applications. Expect Nu Instruments, Sercon and Agilent Technologies to sharpen their own IRMS positioning as Orbitrap-based approaches begin to reshape the category through 2027.
