Tighter Regulations on Meat and Dairy Due to Sheep Virus

22nd August 2024

Tight new regulations that prohibit the private importation of specific meat, cheese, and dairy products have been issued in an effort to prevent peste des petits ruminants (PPR) epidemics.

In response to the latest outbreak of a highly infectious illness that affects goats and sheep in mainland Europe, the government announced the tighter regulations. Even though PPR does not endanger human health, the farming sector in the UK may suffer greatly from any epidemic.

In order to stop PPR from spreading throughout Britain, restrictions on the commercial import of specific goods have been in place; however, Scotland will shortly implement additional regulations that are now in place in England and Wales.

They tighten restrictions on importing meat and milk from sheep and goats into Britain from the EU, nations participating in the European Free Trade Association, Greenland, and the Faroe Islands.

Bring-ins of unpackaged sheep and goat meat and meat products, as well as sheep and goat milk and milk products, will be prohibited from these places. Furthermore, milk products including sheep and goat milk that have been packed and manufactured commercially cannot originate from Greece or Romania.
