UMich Yeast Nanoparticle Vaccine Targets Universal Flu
Researchers at the University of Michigan have developed a yeast-based nanoparticle vaccine platform that could replace annual flu shots with broad, long-lasting protection against multiple influenza strains. Reported at the American Chemical Society Fall 2026 meeting on 24 August, the platform uses baker’s yeast to manufacture virus-like particles (VLPs) displaying the conserved influenza M2 protein, and delivered 100% protection across three flu strains in mouse studies.
The world’s dominant flu vaccine manufacturing method has relied on chicken egg incubation for approximately 80 years, a slow and costly process that struggles to adapt quickly to new mutant strains. Existing vaccines also target the hemagglutinin (HA) protein, which mutates rapidly and requires a new vaccine each year. The Michigan team, led by first author Trang Hoang and advisor Professor Fei Wen, instead targeted influenza’s M2 protein, which has remained highly conserved since the 1918 pandemic across human, swine and avian influenza A strains. They engineered baker’s yeast (Saccharomyces cerevisiae) to produce virus-like particles displaying high densities of M2 protein on the surface.
Blood serum collected from 18 vaccinated mice contained abundant antibodies against M2 from five different influenza strains, and exposure to three of those strains resulted in 100% protection from infection. The team plans to investigate the duration of M2 VLP-induced immunity, with Wen indicating potentially even lifetime protection with occasional boosters. The team has licensed the technology to a company developing yeast-based oral vaccine platforms, with Wen speculating that engineered yeast could be brewed as oral vaccines for influenza and other diseases.
The commercial signal is a rapidly maturing universal flu vaccine category where conserved-target VLP approaches, yeast-based manufacturing and potentially oral delivery could disrupt the incumbent flu vaccine industry. If clinical translation succeeds, existing egg-based manufacturing infrastructure faces significant risk. Expect GSK, Sanofi, CSL Seqirus, Novavax, Moderna and universal flu vaccine specialists to monitor closely as clinical validation progresses through 2027 and 2028.
