Shimadzu Merges SRL Into Kratos to Boost UK MS/XPS R&D

Shimadzu Corporation has consolidated its UK group companies to strengthen European development capabilities for mass spectrometers (MS) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) instruments. Announced on 9 September 2026, Shimadzu Research Laboratory (Europe) Ltd. (SRL, Manchester) has been merged into Kratos Analytical Limited (also Manchester), with Kratos as the surviving company. Personnel from the Mass Spectrometry Business Unit Overseas of Shimadzu UK Limited in Milton Keynes have also been transferred to Kratos.

The restructuring consolidates Shimadzu’s UK R&D and production functions to enhance agile development capabilities for MS and XPS instruments in Europe. Kratos is Shimadzu’s development and manufacturing centre for matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometers (MALDI-TOFMS), a category that produced the MALDI-8030 mass spectrometer and the KRATOS ULTRA2 imaging X-ray photoelectron spectrometer. Before receiving the 2002 Nobel Prize in Chemistry, Shimadzu Executive Research Fellow Koichi Tanaka worked at Kratos and SRL for approximately six years. Both MS and XPS instruments support R&D across medical care, drug discovery, food, environmental, semiconductor and battery applications.

The consolidation intensifies competitive pressure across the global analytical instruments market. Shimadzu’s move follows recent initiatives including its OptQC optical quantum computing investment and Combustion Ion Chromatograph launch for PFAS analysis. In MS, the consolidation places Shimadzu in tighter competition with Bruker (dominant in MALDI biotyper), Thermo Fisher Scientific, SCIEX (Danaher), Waters and Agilent Technologies. In XPS, competitors include Thermo Fisher (Nexsa), ULVAC-PHI, Bruker and JEOL. The reorganisation should support faster product development cycles and stronger European supply chain integration.

The commercial signal is an intensifying global analytical instruments consolidation and R&D infrastructure investment cycle, with UK-based MS and XPS development positioning as a strategic European hub for Shimadzu. Growing PFAS analysis, drug discovery and semiconductor R&D demand support structural growth. Expect Bruker, Thermo Fisher Scientific, SCIEX (Danaher), Waters, Agilent Technologies, JEOL and ULVAC-PHI to sharpen their competitive positioning through 2027.
