iRhythm Acquires VitalConnect for $288m in MCT Push
iRhythm has agreed to acquire VitalConnect for $287.5 million, extending its cardiac monitoring leadership by adding mobile cardiac telemetry capability through the VitalPatch wearable device. Announced on 6 August 2026, the deal is expected to close by the end of 2026 and would unlock roughly $500 million of additional market opportunity within a $1 billion mobile cardiac telemetry (MCT) segment currently only partially served by iRhythm’s existing devices.
VitalConnect’s VitalPatch is a Band-Aid-style wearable that continuously monitors for 21 cardiac arrhythmias alongside several vital signs, with each patch offering seven days of use before replacement. iRhythm’s current cardiac monitor, Zio AT, addresses roughly half of the mobile cardiac telemetry market, according to CEO Quentin Blackford, with the FDA-under-review Zio MCT expected to add another 20% to 30% of the market. VitalPatch fills the remaining gap, giving the combined portfolio full-market coverage across ambulatory, inpatient and hospital-to-home care.
The deal marks a strategic bet on VitalPatch as iRhythm’s primary near-term MCT growth vehicle, with the CEO noting the company will not wait for Zio MCT clearance before commercialising VitalPatch. The combination of two direct competitors in the MCT category triggers Federal Trade Commission and Hart-Scott-Rodino antitrust review, though Blackford argued the market remains highly competitive given the presence of Philips’ BioTelemetry and Boston Scientific’s Preventice Solutions. iRhythm continues to pursue Zio MCT clearance as an additional future portfolio option, with VitalPatch integration positioned as the primary near-term commercial focus.
The commercial signal is a rapidly consolidating US mobile cardiac telemetry category where wearable form factors are the primary competitive differentiator. Blackford’s bet on VitalPatch over Zio MCT indicates confidence in near-term commercial acceleration. Expect Philips (BioTelemetry), Boston Scientific (Preventice Solutions) and Abbott to sharpen their own wearable cardiac monitoring positioning through the rest of 2026 and 2027.
