Medtronic Adds Real-Time AI to Hugo Surgical Robot
Medtronic has unveiled a new real-time artificial intelligence computing platform for its Hugo surgical robot, aimed at supporting surgeon decision-making during robotic procedures. Announced on 21 July 2026, the Touch Surgery Aide platform incorporates Nvidia’s computing infrastructure and runs Medtronic’s first FDA-cleared real-time AI application, Instrument Exit Point (IEP). The platform will make its debut at the Society of Robotic Surgery meeting in Florida this week.
Touch Surgery Aide combines computer vision and artificial intelligence to process surgical video and procedural data in real time, with multiple AI applications running simultaneously during a live procedure and the system designed to continuously learn and evolve. The IEP application provides a visual notification when instruments move beyond the surgical field of view. Jim Peichel, Chief Technology Officer at Medtronic, framed the platform as a fundamental evolution in how surgery is supported, moving from technology that assists the surgeon’s hand to technology that helps clinical teams work faster and more effectively during the procedure itself.
The Touch Surgery Aide platform extends Medtronic’s existing Touch Surgery ecosystem, which is used in more than 1,500 operating rooms worldwide for pre-operative planning, training, tele-proctoring and post-operative insights. Its underlying architecture is designed to support expansion beyond robotic procedures into laparoscopic surgery over time. The announcement sharpens Medtronic’s US positioning against Intuitive Surgical, whose da Vinci system has dominated the US robotic soft tissue market for over two decades. Hugo received FDA clearance for urologic procedures in December 2025, with additional 510(k) filings pending for general surgery and gynaecologic specialties.
The commercial signal is real-time AI moving from adjunct feature to competitive vector in the robotic soft tissue market. With Intuitive’s da Vinci 5 already integrating AI capability and Medtronic now bringing Hugo up to parity through Nvidia-powered infrastructure, expect similar responses from Johnson & Johnson (Ottava), Stryker and CMR Surgical as the intelligent surgery arms race intensifies through 2026 and 2027.
