Shimadzu Launches STABLO-AP DRY AIR Battery Ioniser

Shimadzu has launched STABLO-AP DRY AIR, the world’s first desktop corona discharge ioniser specialised for dry air environments, targeting static electricity control challenges in battery research, development and manufacturing. Announced on 4 August 2026, the product uses a proprietary discharge control system that finely adjusts frequency and voltage to stabilise static elimination at dew points of -30°C or lower, at three to four times lower cost than radiation-based alternatives.

Lithium battery and other rechargeable battery R&D and manufacturing increasingly take place in dry air environments, as moisture adversely affects battery performance and safety. However, static electricity becomes particularly problematic in these settings, disrupting the powder sample handling and accurate weighing that battery development depends on. Corona discharge behaviour in dry air is fundamentally different from standard atmospheric conditions, meaning conventional atmospheric ionisers cannot deliver adequate static control. Existing alternatives (soft X-ray and vacuum UV instruments) require shielding, safety controls, and expensive discharge needles and lamps that must be replaced regularly, driving up total cost of ownership.

 

The STABLO-AP DRY AIR supports three configurations: standalone on a dedicated stand, integrated with Shimadzu’s AP W-AD or AP series analytical balances, or hand-held. Compatible environments include dry rooms, dry booths, glove boxes filled with dry air and open dry chambers, with additional interoperability with Shimadzu’s MCT series micro compression testing machines. The launch extends Shimadzu’s STABLO-AP static elimination franchise (which also includes STABLO-AP Ar for argon and STABLO-AP N2 for nitrogen environments) and has together sold over 15,000 units globally. The product builds on Shimadzu’s analytical balance heritage stretching back to 1918.

The commercial signal is a rapidly expanding battery R&D infrastructure market driven by global carbon neutrality investment. Cost-effective static control specifically designed for dry air environments removes a longstanding barrier for battery developers. Expect Mettler Toledo, Sartorius and A&D Company to sharpen their own battery-oriented analytical balance positioning through the rest of 2026 and 2027 as the segment matures.
