Thermo Fisher, MJFF Complete Parkinson’s Proteomics Analysis
Thermo Fisher Scientific has completed Olink Explore HT proteomic analysis of approximately 5,500 research samples from The Michael J. Fox Foundation’s landmark Parkinson’s Precision Medicine Initiative (PPMI), expanding one of the largest open-access precision medicine datasets in neurodegenerative disease. Announced on 11 August 2026, the resulting data is now available to researchers globally via PPMI’s data repository, supporting biomarker discovery and therapeutic development in Parkinson’s disease.
Olink Explore HT, part of Thermo Fisher’s proteomic sciences portfolio following the Olink acquisition, enables high-throughput, affinity-based proteomic analysis using Proximity Extension Assay (PEA) technology. Applied to deeply characterised PPMI samples, the platform supports investigation of patient subtypes, disease progression, biological pathways linked to inflammation, lysosomal function and neuronal stress, and candidate biomarker discovery. Parkinson’s disease affects an estimated 10 million people worldwide, with numbers expected to rise as populations age. Although still diagnosed and monitored largely through clinical symptoms, Parkinson’s involves multiple biological pathways and distinct patient subtypes that complicate biomarker development for patient stratification and targeted therapy.
PPMI launched in 2010 and was recently renamed the Parkinson’s Precision Medicine Initiative to reflect the field’s shift toward defining Parkinson’s by its underlying biology rather than clinical symptoms alone. PPMI’s open-access data have been downloaded more than 50 million times. Samantha Hutten, MJFF’s Principal Biomarker Scientist for Translational Research, positioned the expanded proteomic analyses as creating new opportunities to identify biomarkers and biological pathways for earlier diagnosis and more targeted therapeutic approaches. Yan Zhang, president of proteomic sciences at Thermo Fisher, framed data availability as putting validation work into motion.
The commercial signal is a rapidly maturing neurodegenerative precision medicine market where large-scale proteomics platforms increasingly underpin therapeutic pipeline decisions. Thermo Fisher’s Olink acquisition continues to pay off as PPMI joins CorEvitas Vitiligo Registry and other high-profile initiatives. Expect Alamar Biosciences (NULISA), Standard BioTools (SomaLogic), Quanterix and Beckman Coulter to sharpen their own neurodegenerative proteomics positioning through late 2026 and 2027.
