Suri Solves Toothbrush Recycling Dilema
Annually, about four billion toothbrushes are discarded, even including electric varieties. In most cases, electric ones are fused shut, making it impossible to change the battery when it runs out or breaks.
Suri (sustainable rites) works to solve this problem.
Co- founder Mark Rushmore explained that they use corn starch and other plant-based resources to manufacture their brushes, with novel castor oil-based bristles which reduces reliance on fossil fuels.
Along with free recycling, Suri provides free mailing facilities to encourage responsible returns and disposal.
A screw has been built into the aluminium base which means users can disassemble the product and swap out the batteries to keep it long term, rather than buying a brand-new brush every time the battery dies.
Suri can run off one charge for up to a month.
Co-founder Gyve Safavi (GS) explained that the prepaid brush head return packet encourages ethical recycling and means it can be used to create another product.
Eventually the aim is to make the head entirely biodegradable while providing a solution for dentists to confidently recommend to patients.
Suri also tracks the carbon emissions they produce throughout the entire process and offsets them; they are have collaborated with Climatepartner to achieve carbon neutral status.
Although the brush head is not completely degradable, it gives consumers an extremely simple, and accessible method to encourage a lot more recycling.
