UK and Switzerland Propose New Science Programme

15th November 2022

The EU’s Horizon initiative, whose six-year budget, up to 2027, is €95.5 billion (£81.2 billion), has barred the United Kingdom and Switzerland from participating.

A debate over post-Brexit trade agreements has delayed the UK’s membership, Switzerland caused increased tensions when they rejected proposals for an all-encompassing treaty with the European trade bloc.

Markus Leitner, the Swiss ambassador, characterised it as a “political signal” to strengthen current relationships and pursue new endeavours.

Science Minister for the UK, George Freeman, explained that “being a science superpower means deepening our international relationships with leading research and development economies like Switzerland.”

The collaboration between the two nations will concentrate on topics like artificial intelligence and launching new enterprises using academic breakthroughs.

But according to Ambassador Markus Leitner, this is “separate” from its attempts to be a part of Horizon, which are still a “priority.”

Ministers are pushing ahead with Plan B, their alternative international programme, out of concern for a national “brain drain.” Universities, however, have stated that this would only quality as a “second-best” option because of the monetary potential of the deal does not compare to that of Horizon.

Mr Freeman said that “This Anglo-Swiss agreement is the first of a number I am negotiating. I was recently in Israel, which will follow next.”

The Conservative administration anticipates a mass reduction on public expenditure on November 17.
