Academic Award Given for ATP-Bio Research
Dr. Barry Bentley will investigate novel techniques for “freezing biological time” in order to preserve cells, tissues, and organs.
His work intends to transform the way biological systems are kept and will be carried out at the National Science Foundation Engineering Research Center for ATP-Bio (Advanced Technologies for the Preservation of Biological Systems).
Bentley said he was “elated”, expressing that “for a number of years, I have been concerned by the lack of mature technologies for storing tissues and organs, and the real consequences this has for patients and their families.”
He hopes that “this will be the start of a long-term partnership between Harvard, Mass General and Cardiff Met, that may eventually contribute to improving” human health.
The Fulbright Program has been going for over 75 years, supported by the US administration and active in more than 160 nations. It acts as the sole bilateral, transatlantic scholarship scheme in the UK. Awards are given for research or academic study in any discipline at any authorized US or UK university.
Applicants are selected for the opportunity to learn, teach, and undertake studies based on academic excellence and leadership aptitude.
Dean of Cardiff School of Technologies, Professor Jon Platts, expressed that “Barry’s achievements help to put Cardiff School of Technologies on the research map. Since our launch in February of 2018, we have managed to attract talented researchers like Barry to help us build our reputation. Seeing success like Barry’s gives everybody a lift and the whole school is delighted.”
