NHS begins major recruitment drive

3rd March 2006

A TV and radio campaign to recruit more staff to the NHS has begun north of the border.

Running for three months from next Monday, the campaigns will used NHS staff instead of actors and will highlight areas where the health service is short staffed in Scotland.

Andy Kerr, Scottish executive health minister, said that the campaign highlighted the need for people from diverse backgrounds. Staff featured include people working as paramedics, radiographers and receptionists.

“Importantly, all of the NHS staff shown in our advertising are actually working in the service right now,” he said, adding, “Every career in the NHS is essential to the smooth running of the service, especially as work becomes more team- driven.

“The outstanding dedication and innovation all NHS staff show in their daily roles can never be underestimated.”

Celebrities such as Carol Smilie, former footballer Ally McCoist, Kaye Adams and Alexander McCall-Smith have put their names behind the campaign.

Health bosses in the country have started to looking abroad to fill positions. On Monday it was announced that 40 polish dentists would be recruited by the end of the year.
