Funding secured for Durham research project

8th March 2006

A scientific research programme which began at Durham University has gained ?200,000 of funding.

The finances were acquired through the Centre of Excellence for Life Sciences (CELS) and will be used by the Creative Gene Technology (CGT) company, which was founded by members of the university.

It is intended that the work paid for by the new funding will lead to the pioneering of technology that could give rise to new methods of healthcare.

Professors Keith Lindsey and Toni Slabas of the university’s school of biological and biomedical sciences created CGT as the result of ten years’ worth of internationally recognised research.

It has mainly focused on improving crop yields for farmers by experimenting with plant cell technology.

The research can be applied to healthcare, however, as it has investigated the quality of oils being produced by plants and these oils can also be used in the cosmetics and medical industries.

“The healthcare sector is a great example of how and where CGT’s technology could be exploited to its full potential,” said Professor Lindsey.

“With the support of CELS, we hope this is an area we will break into soon.”
