Allergan warns over fake Botox treatments
Allergan, the California-based global healthcare company, has urged consumers seeking Botox to check the credentials of the people offering the cosmetic treatment.
The company, which sells Botox, was responding to a recent case that involved the death of a woman following the unlicensed administration of an unknown cosmetic treatment in the US.
“This unfortunate incident makes clear how important it is for consumers to seek out licensed, trained and qualified healthcare professionals when considering treatment with Botox and to verify that they are receiving authentic Botox and not an unlicensed botulinum toxin or alternative substance,” said Douglas S Ingram, Allergan’s executive vice president, general counsel and secretary.
“Allergan has a number of measures in place to ensure the integrity and authenticity of Botox, and there are important steps patients should take to protect themselves from unscrupulous and unethical practitioners.”
The company has said that in addition to the warnings it is offering, it has also added holograms to vials of Botox, making it easier for those receiving or administering the treatment to determine its authenticity.
