MHRA clears drug trial firm

6th April 2006

The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulation Agency (MHRA) has confirmed that the firms involved in the drug trial that left six men fighting for their life was conducted in accordance with safety guidelines.

Speaking at a press conference to flag up the MHRA’s interim report on the tests, chief executive Professor Kent Woods said all the signs were the correct protocols had been followed.

Professor Woods said the trials at Northwick Park hospital in north-west London on March 13th, which saw those involved left in a coma as a result of dramatic side-effects, were correctly followed.
Speaking on Channel Four’s Evening News, Professor Woods commented: “We have found no evidence at all which suggests there were any problems with the manufacturing of the product which was given to the patients.”

“It appears not to have been contaminated, not to contain anything that shouldn?t have been there and the administration of the material in the trial appears to have been exactly as per the agreed protocol, there were no testing errors.”

He added that it did not yet yield any implications for future trials, stressing that more information would be needed before conclusions were made about the future of testing.

The Association of the British Pharmaceutical Industry has welcomed the conclusions of the MHRA report and urged all those involved to learn “the appropriate lessons”.
