Schwarz Pharma reveals bladder drug success

11th April 2006

Schwarz Pharma has said that fesoterodine, the drug being trialled as a treatment for overactive bladder (OAB) has shown positive results in a phase III trial.

The drug was found to be more successful than placebo in “all primary variables” and the company has said that both doses used in the trial ? 4mg and 8mg ? were well tolerated.

“The reduction seen in urgency incontinence is particularly relevant since urgency and urgency incontinence represent the most troublesome symptoms experienced by patients with overactive bladder,” said Dr Chris Chapple of Royal Hallamshire Hospital’s Department of Urology and principal investigator of the trial.

The trial involved more than 1,100 patients who, following a two-week placebo run-in phase, were administered the drug or placebo for 12 weeks. Patients were administered with the treatment, placebo or a comparator once daily.

Schwarz Pharma said that both doses of fesoterodine were effective in reducing the number of micturitions per 24 hours and the number of urge incontinence over the same period when compared with placebo. These improvements were also more notable than with the comparator.
