Johnson and Johnson company to open cardiovascular research centre
Cordis, the Johnson and Johnson medical equipment company specialising in cardiovascular devices, has announced it is to build a new research centre in Silicon Valley, California.
It says it wishes to further the research of cardiovascular devices and the research centre’s location will allow it to collaborate and share ideas with other Johnson and Johnson medical companies in the area.
Rick Anderson, the group chairman of Johnson and Johnson and the franchise chairman of Cordis, remarked: “The Silicon Valley is known worldwide as a hub of innovative ideas and engineering talent. This is the ideal place to advance our leadership position in the development of innovative products designed to treat the millions of patients with coronary artery and vascular diseases.”
“We are thrilled by the opportunities on the West Coast to extend our research and development capabilities,” he concluded.
Cordis manufactures a variety of stents and other types of devices designed to improve the conditions caused by coronary artery diseases. Last month it was involved in a patent dispute with Boston Scientific over a drug-eluting stent design.
David Williams, professor of medicine at Brown Medical School and director of cardiovascular laboratory and interventional cardiology at Rhode Island hospital, remarked: “As physicians in the cardiac and vascular fields, we share Cordis’ aspiration to defeat cardiovascular disease and working together, we are one step closer to this goal.”
