3M reveals new surgical skin closure product

25th July 2006

3M Skin Care has unveiled a new surgical skin closure product that can close wounds approximately two minutes quicker than by using simple running sutures, according to a recent study.

The Steri-Strip S is described as a non-invasive, adhesive-based wound closure device designed for surgical incisions and low-tension lacerations.

It is designed to limit trauma and add comfort for patients, while its “unique design” enables wounds to be aligned more closely than with running sutures, limiting the creation of scar tissue.

A survey of physicians found that 78 per cent were satisfied or completely satisfied with the new product, as well as 85 per cent of patients.

Craig DiLorenzo, 3M Skin Health’s business director, stated: “This innovative technology creates a new skin closure option with multiple benefits, including minimizing scarring, which is important to many patients who undergo various surgical procedures each year.”

“This is a truly unique design in the primary wound closure field that allows surgeons and other clinicians to think about and perform wound closures in a new, simple and effective way,” he added.

3M Skin Care offers a range of adhesive wound closure strips, in addition to disposable skin staplers and removers.

Other types of technology in development for wound closure involve biological sealants and treated dressings, which are used to increase the rate of wound healing.
