Karl Storz: “Revolutionary” resectoscope launch is nearing

26th July 2006

Karl Storz has said the plans for the launch of its advanced Bipolar Resectoscope and its Autocon II 400 electrosurgical unit (ESU) are nearing completion.

The company describes the design of the resectoscope as “revolutionary”, providing advantages in urology applications. Its ESU is capable of operating in either bipolar or monopolar outputs, enabling surgeons to perform resection in either mode.

The bipolar and monopolar C-cut modes offered by the ESU results in less bleeding and a reduced need for coagulation in transurethral resection of the prostate, meaning a reduction in transfusions and surgery time.

Howard Klymas, Karl Storz’s group marketing manager for urology, remarked: ” This is truly one unit that does it all. While bipolar resection with saline irrigation solution offers clinical benefits for patients who are cardiac challenged or have other co-morbidities, monopolar resection offers an economical and time-tested treatment for otherwise healthy patients.”

“In our new Bipolar Resectoscope, the current flow path has been redesigned to be isolated laterally and confined to only the smallest space,” he added.

Mr Klymas concluded: “The AUTOCON II 400 ESU provides a sound economical solution for today’s surgeons while supporting the needs and capabilities of tomorrow.”

Karl Storz describes itself as “not giants on an international scale, but leaders in matters that count”. The company has a facility in Dundee, while the firm’s headquarters are based in Tuttlingen, Germany.
