Parliament lobby ‘to show depth of opposition to NHS reforms’

1st November 2006

The NHS Together lobby in parliament today will show the strength of opposition against the government’s reform of the health service, according to the Liberal Democrats.

Health spokesman Steve Webb claims that the government’s “rushed” reforms are causing a great deal of damage to the NHS, something that will be emphasised at the lobby’s meeting.

Mr Webb states that the NHS relies on its staff to provide a high standard of care, despite an increasingly “demoralising” working environment.

“The job cuts confirmed by the government this week are only the tip of the iceberg – how many jobs have been lost to recruitment freezes and compulsory retirement?” he remarked.

“We will not see the true level of job losses across the NHS until hospitals have finished consulting on their reconfigurations,” he added.

Mr Webb concluded by saying that patient care would ultimately suffer.

A new YouGov poll on behalf of the Trades Union Congress revealed that over half of British voters believe that the NHS is in a worse state than it was ten years ago.
