Medtronic and Biosense Webster announce cardiac care partnership

Cardiac mapping and ablation firm Biosense Webster and Medtronic have announced plans to establish a partnership to develop the care of patients with cardiac arrhythmias.

As part of the programme, the companies will work together on initiating clinical studies, launching educational schemes and developing medical product technology for patients.

The companies intend to design a clinical trial that will increase the acceptance of ablation treatment and identify patients who are more likely to succeed with this therapy.

A joint programme of research and development from the firms will aim to combine particular technologies to form innovative new cardiac arrhythmia treatments.

Steve Mahle, president of cardiac rhythm disease management business at Medtronic, said: “Medtronic is intently focused on researching and exploring ways to utilise existing or new technologies for electrophysiologists to better identify and treat patients with cardiac arrhythmias.”

He added that this partnership agreement will launch with the integration of diagnostic and monitoring abilities with imaging and navigation skills to improve the ability of physicians to identify and treat affected patients.

Last month, Medtronic announced the merger of its cardiac surgery and vascular business segments to form the combined Medtronic CardioVascular business, with revenues of approximately $1.9 billion (one billion pounds).
