Siemens demonstrates simultaneous brain imaging technology

22nd May 2007

Siemens Medical Solutions has demonstrated a prototype of the first functioning system capable of scanning the brain using both magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and positron emission tomography (PET) technology.

The MR-PET aims to integrate the psychological and metabolic state assessment ability of PET scans with the high specificity and outstanding soft tissue contrast available in MRI.

Siemens reports that this technology will help diagnostic work relating to a number of neurological diseases, including epilepsy, Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, schizophrenia and depression, with the differing characteristics of each type of scan being used simultaneously to provide clinicians with enhanced information.

The company notes that integration of technology is a key trend in the medical industry, with this present merger going beyond mere fusion of images to genuine amalgamation of technology with clear diagnostic advantages.

Professor Erich Reinhardt, chief executive officer and president of Siemens Medical Solutions, said: “From biomarker development to imaging equipment, to clinical applications, to information technology solution, Siemens is well positioned to continue to advance the molecular imaging of biological processes.”

He added that these technological advances will aid the company in its efforts to increase care quality while lowering costs.

In January 2007, Siemens Medical Solutions announced the initiation of a clinical trial using brain scanning technology to look for molecular markers that may aid the diagnosis of Alzheimer’s disease.
