Oxoid announces Young Food Microbiologist of the Year winners

Oxoid has announced the winners of its 2006/07 Young Food Microbiologist of the Year award.

Bestowed upon a microbiologist under the age of 30 working in the food and beverage sector, first prize was conferred upon laboratory manager for New Zealand-based Tegel Foods Jessica Roberts, for her work on safety at the chicken processing company.

First prize includes £1,000 and a trip to the 2008 International Association of Food Protection meeting in Ohio.

Cheryl Mooney, chairman of the judging panel, commented that Ms Roberts’ work had a significant effect on food safety and in turn human health.

"Her entry demonstrated team leadership and a determination to operate at the highest level. We are delighted to award her first prize," she said.

Microbiologist at Qarshi Research International in Pakistan Saadia Maqsood came second and Stecey Ryder of Long Clawson Dairy in the UK received third place.

Last month, Oxoid announced the launch of a new system assay for the detection of staphylococcus aureus in baby formula and ground beef.
