Applied Biosystems unveils new forensic laboratory software application

Applied Biosystems has launched a "first of its kind" expert software application for use within forensic laboratories.

The GeneMapper ID-X will enable laboratories to deliver faster DNA results by automating routine DNA analysis and enabling an efficient manual review of complex samples.

The software application works by pinpointing the exact DNA samples which need reviewing manually.

It will be used in criminal investigations to allow analysts to report DNA results with increased efficiency.

When producing the GeneMapper, Applied Biosystems incorporated feedback from over a thousand forensic laboratories and numerous law enforcement agencies, including the Washington State Police.

Gary Shutler, DNA technical leader at the Washington State Patrol, said: "Expert systems in forensic DNA analysis will eventually become essential for every crime lab.

"It is the next step in the evolution of our field. Years from now, we will wonder how we ever worked without one."

Applied Biosystems focuses upon basic research, commercial research and standardized testing within the life sciences marketplace.
