Half of adults ‘would consider having cosmetic surgery’

Almost half of all adults would consider having cosmetic surgery, with tummy tucks as the most attractive option, new research has revealed today.

Mums were the most likely to contemplate the idea of going under the knife and three in five of those with young children said they would like a tummy tuck.

Nearly half of this group said they would like to have liposuction.

“Having children puts women’s bodies through an awful lot of change, and many may feel unhappy with their post-pregnancy figure. This is a key reason why mums are most likely to want surgery,” said Alexandra Richmond, senior consumer analyst at Mintel.

“To some, a cosmetic procedure seems like it would be a quick and easy solution, when in reality it can be anything but.”

Across both sexes two in five would consider a tummy tuck and 36 per cent would have liposuction.

Fewer than one in five (19 per cent) surveyed said they would have breast enlargements.

“Although not everyone who would consider surgery will actually go through with it, it is still staggering that almost half the nation entertain the idea of going under the knife,” Ms Richmond commented.

“Clearly today many see surgery as a way of improving their body shape, without the long term commitment to eating healthily and exercising regularly.”
