GE Healthcare launches diagnostic improvements for women’s health ultrasound system

GE Healthcare has announced a number of enhancement to the Voluson E8 Breakthrough 2008, its premier ultrasound system for gynaecology and obstetrics.

The firm presented these improvements at the annual meeting of the American Institute of Ultrasound that took place from March 12th-15th 2008 in San Diego.

In addition to improved probe imaging capabilities that facilitate the viewing of increased anatomic detail by clinicians, the system now uses the the Sonography-based Automated Volume Count (SonoAVC) software programme.

This system offers an efficient method of calculating the volume and number of ovarian follicles.

GE Healthcare reports that the automation and standardisation offered by SonoAVC provides increased consistency and efficiency, with patients also benefiting from instant results available in an easy-to-view report format.

Alfred Z Abuhamad, chairman of obstetrics and gynaecology at Eastern Virginia Medical School, said: “Displaying ovarian follicles in a 3-D mode allows for an easy visual depiction of the geometric shape of individual follicles and thus enhances the optimal evaluation of the stimulated ovary.”

He added that SonoAVC marks a significant step towards a software system that automates and simplifies follicular assessment.

Earlier this month, the second annual Klein report named GE Healthcare as the worldwide leader in the hand-carried ultrasound sector, when measured by revenue.
