Intervet offers accolade to academic

Professor George Gettinby has been honoured with Intervet’s Dieter Lutticken Award for his statistical and epidemiological research methods in sea-lice treatments in salmon farming, according to fishupdate.com.

The professor, who works at Strathclyde University’s Department of Statistics and Modelling Science, has been given the award for his innovative research contributions.

Intervet stated it will have a pronounced impact on the production of veterinary medicines.

His research will contribute to the reduction of the number of animals used in medical research and is worth $20,000 (£10,000).

Professor Coenraad Hendriksen who was chair of the jury panel commented: “The approaches developed by Dr Gettinby contribute to the reduction and replacement of animal usage for efficacy, safety and quality confirmation of veterinary products.”

The professor, who works at the Netherlands Centre Alternatives to Animal Use at Utrecht University, also praised the positive environmental impact Professor Gettinby’s methods will have.

The Dieter Lutticken Award is given to scientists or institutions which have positively contributed to helping to reduce and replacing the use of animals in research.
