Novo Nordisk presents positive NovMix 30 data

Novo Nordisk has announced positive data from the Improve study showing significant improvements in glycaemic control in patients administered with NovoMix 30.

According to the results presented at the annual meeting of the American Diabetes Association in San Francisco, blood sugar control was achieved with the premixed modern insulin product in patients who had no previous pharmaceutical treatment or whose condition was purely controlled on other drugs.

The company reports that a total of 71 per cent of patients administered with the drug reached their HbA1c target level of less than or equal to seven per cent.

Furthermore, this was achieved with no significant weight gain and a 70 per cent reduction in hypoglycaemic events was reported by the patients.

Professor Paul Valensi, head of the Department of Endocrinology-Diabetology-Nutrition at the Jean Verdier Hospital in France, said: “While the number of people left with very high HbA1c levels before treatment with insulin is alarming, it is encouraging that treatment with NovoMix 30 was able to bring them in good control in just six months.”

He added that the drug has shown itself to be an effective treatment for poorly-controlled diabetes patients.

In May 2006, Novo Nordisk announced that the European Commission had approved alterations to the dosage guidelines for NovoMix 30, approving once-daily therapy with the compound and twice-daily use in more severe cases of type 2 diabetes.
