Johnson and Johnson unveils lenses for astigmatism

26th June 2008

A division of medical product manufacturer Johnson & Johnson (J&J) has introduced a new contact lens for astigmatism.

Acuvue Oasys combines features from some of the best lenses on the market, according to Vistakon, which is part of J&J Vision Care.

Sheila Hickson-Curran, director of medical affairs at the company, said Acuvue Oasys offers “outstanding visual activity” to provide consistent and clear vision.

The lenses work using the Accelerated Stabilisation Design system – already used in Acuvue Advance ? together with Hydraclear Plus, which is a base material and “moisture-rich wetting agent”.

In addition, senofilcon A is present in the product to help alleviate some of the discomfort experienced by contact lens wearers, such as dryness or tiredness.

Vistakon said senofilcon A is a silicone hydrogel material 50 per cent smoother than others on the market.

The unveiling of Acuvue Oasys is one of several announcements made by J&J in the last week.

On June 18th it announced that J&J Nordic AB ? a J&J company ? had acquired a Swedish development firm called Amic.

Amic produces in vitro diagnostic systems for use in near-patient or point of care settings.
