Bayer symposium focuses on polyurethane solutions

2nd December 2008

Bayer’s recent international customer symposium in Leverkusen focused on applications for polyurethanes, the company has revealed.

Described as "probably the most versatile of all plastics", solutions using polyurethane were discussed by automakers as well as direct suppliers at the event – such as sound-absorbing systems for the interior of vehicles and roof module concepts.

Attendees also looked at the development of a spray which can protect against stone chippings and corrosion.

Bayer explained the majority of polyurethane lightweight construction solutions which are currently used for vehicles are based on a sandwich/composite design, for example in roofs.

The company went on to say using this method "enables significant weight savings to be made" in a roof, particularly when a spray system is used.

The facility will ensure the chlorine supply for a new 250,000 tons-per-year toluene diisocyanate plant in Shanghai, expected to come on stream in 2010.
