GlaxoSmithKline Cervarix data now available

8th May 2009

GlaxoSmithKline’s results from studies of the cervical cancer vaccine Cervarix is available at the 25th International Papillomavirus Conference taking place today (May 8th) in Sweden.

Data related to three “important” projects – a comparative trial of Cervarix and Gardasil, a phase III efficacy trial and a long-term follow-up study – has been published.

According to GlaxoSmithKline, the first showed Cervarix to generate a high immune response in comparison to Gardasil, while the second test’s results proved Cervarix to provide “high and statistically significant” efficacy in defending against pre-cancerous lesions.

The third study looked at sustained antibody levels following vaccination. Subjects maintained high levels against HPV 16 and HPV 18 in the 7.3 years afterwards.

Jean Stephenne is president and general Mmanager of GlaxoSmithKline Biologicals. She said preventing cervical cancer was a “public health priority”.

“We are pleased with these findings and how they can further the understanding of the role of Cervarix in helping to protect women against cervical cancer.”

Meanwhile, GlaxoSmithKline announced earlier this week it was divesting the rights to Wellbutrin XL, which is used to treat depression.
