Bayer asserts sustainability is important

Bayer aims to be sustainable in everything it does, it has asserted.

Werner Wenning, chairman of the board of management, made this comment after the company released a report outlining the strategies implemented to help it achieve this goal.

Areas the publication focuses on include employees, economics, medicine, human rights and corporate responsibility.

To meet its Social Health Care Programme, Bayer provides products for free to the World Health Organization to improve the treatment of a number of tropical diseases, such as malaria and African sleeping sickness.

It also makes contraceptives available for a reduced price throughout underprivileged locations.

The business commented: “Bayer supports innovative programmes that enable patients in both industrialised and emerging countries to access new and highly effective pharmaceuticals.”

In 2008, it tried to further meet its social responsibility during times of economic uncertainty by investing around 50 million euros (43.49 million pounds) in education, research, health and environmental protection.

Earlier this month, Bayer received the European Risk Management Award for its climate programme.
