Lilly discusses results from Byetta study

Lilly has stated results from a study show that people beginning therapy with Byetta (exenatide) injection are not at an increased risk of acute pancreatitis compared to other treatments.

Some 26,000 patients took part in the investigation, which the company and Amylin Pharmaceuticals conducted over three years.

After studying the data, examiners found the drug was not associated with a higher danger of pancreatitis compared to the other antidiabetes medications, explained Amylin’s senior vice-president of research and development Dr Orville G Kolterman.

“We plan to further validate this interim analysis of claims data through medical records review,” he said.

Last week, Lilly released results from a study of an investigational glucagon-like peptide 1 called LY2189265 on its effectiveness at treating type 2 diabetes.

It was found to be able to control glycemic levels better than the placebo. Global development leader of the investigation Dr Pawel Fludzinski remarked he was “excited” by the data.

He added it could be very beneficial to millions of patients who suffer from the condition.
