Boehringer Ingelheim receives EU approval for Parkinson’s treatments

21st June 2010

Boehringer Ingelheim has been granted European marketing approval for two new dosages of its Mirapexin/Sifrol tablet treatment for Parkinson’s disease.

The two new tablet strengths are 2.25 mg and 3.75 mg and have been designed to allow patients to take only one tablet per day, thus making the treatment regime more convenient.

Boehringer Ingelheim’s treatment has been approved in Europe as a thrice-daily treatment for early and advanced idiopathic Parkinson’s disease since October 2009.

The new dosing formulations have been proven in clinical trials to demonstrate a similar safety and efficacy profile to the previously-approved specification.

Professor Klaus Dugi, corporate senior vice-president of medicine at Boehringer Ingelheim, said: “It is hoped that the new dosing formulations will further contribute to reducing the pill burden and aiding compliance both for patients and their carers.”

Last week, Boehringer Ingelheim published new clinical trial data supporting the safety and efficacy of dabigatran etexilate, a treatment for venous thromboembolisms following total hip replacement surgery.
