Bristol-Myers Squibb reports new diabetes drug trial data
Bristol-Myers Squibb has published data from a new clinical trial which illustrates the efficacy of its new diabetes treatment dapagliflozin.
According to results from the phase III study, type 2 patients trialled using the treatment as a monotherapy achieved a statistically significant reduction in glycosylated haemoglobin levels compared to a placebo control group.
This means the drug was able to meet its primary efficacy endpoint, while secondary targets of fasting plasma glucose and total body weight reductions were also achieved.
Ele Ferrannini, professor of internal medicine at the University of Pisa School of Medicine, said the results “show the potential of this agent to help patients with type 2 diabetes”.
The drug is being developmed by Bristol-Myers Squibb and collaborative partner AstraZeneca as part of a partnership which was agreed in January 2007.
Earlier this month, Bristol-Myers Squibb called an early end to a clinical trial of the atrial fibrillation treatment apixaban, after it met its efficacy targets ahead of schedule.
