GlaxoSmithKline commences phase III trials for shingles vaccine

GlaxoSmithKline has commenced a new phase III clinical trial programme of a new vaccine designed for the prevention of shingles.

The studies of the candidate herpes zoster vaccine will aim to collect data on the efficacy, safety and immunogenicity of drug, with more than 30,000 patients set to be involved globally.

GlaxoSmithKline has identified shingles, which is more likely to affect older patients, as an important clinical target due to the current lack of available treatment options.

Norman Begg, chief medical officer of GlaxoSmithKline Biologicals, stated that the commencement of the phase III trial programme therefore represents a "significant" development.

He added: "Progression into late stage development of our herpes zoster vaccine is an important milestone in ongoing efforts to potentially help address an important unmet need."

Earlier this month, it was announced that GlaxoSmithKline will receive a priority review from the US Food and Drug Administration for Benlysta, the new lupus treatment it is developing with Human Genome Sciences.
