BVA: Spending Review could hit animal welfare efforts

The British Veterinary Association (BVA) has expressed its concerns that efforts to promote animal welfare could be adversely affected by measures outlined in the new Spending Review.

According to the organisation, a focus on securing flood defences in the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs' amended budget could limit the amount of resources available for animal health initiatives.

Harvey Locke, president of the BVA, nevertheless stated that there are elements of the review that are to be welcomed, such as its commitments of funding for science investment and efforts to tackle tuberculosis.

He added that the BVA is awaiting further details on plans to introduce responsibility and cost sharing "with interest".

"The BVA will continue to champion these health and welfare issues to ensure they remain a priority for the department," added Mr Locke.

Earlier this month, the BVA criticised higher education reform proposals put forward by Lord Browne, stating that increasing tuition fees will unfairly penalise veterinary medicine students.
