Covidien receives regulatory approval for new Parietex mesh

2nd June 2011

Covidien has been granted regulatory approval in the EU and US for the sale of its new Parietex Optimised Composite (PCOx) mesh.

The company has received CE Mark approval and US Food and Drug Administration ratification for the new product, which is used to facilitate the healing process following open and laparoscopic ventral hernia repair.

A successor to the Parietex Composite (PCO) mesh, it is three times more resistant than its predecessor and features a stronger and more visible textile design.

The PCOx product, which has been shown to promote rapid abdominal wall integration and facilitate strong tack fixation in animal trials, will be available in both Europe and the US this month.

Michel Therin, vice-president for soft tissue repair and biosurgery at Covidien, said: "It's an impressive accomplishment to improve upon a trusted product like PCO mesh by making it stronger and more resistant while simultaneously preserving the benefits that surgeons expect."

Last month, the company announced that it has completed enrolment for a new trial of another Parietex mesh product, ProGrip, which is used in the treatment of primary inguinal hernias.ADNFCR-8000103-ID-800565329-ADNFCR
