Bayer HealthCare applies for approval of new contraceptive

Bayer HealthCare has applied for European and US regulatory approval of a new long-term contraception system that lasts for up to three years.

The new low-dose levonorgestrel releasing intrauterine system uses a small, flexible T-shaped plastic body to provide a controlled release of levonorgestrel at a low rate over a long period of time.

Compared to oral contraceptives, this system would offer a reliable means of birth control that does not rely on taking a pill each day, while it also allows fertility to return rapidly to normal levels following removal.

Data from clinical studies in North America, Latin America and several European nations has proven the safety and efficacy of the product.

Dr Flemming Ornskov, chief marketing officer for strategic marketing of general medicine at Bayer HealthCare, said: "Our new low-dose intrauterine system will be an excellent choice especially for young women who haven't had children so far and who are looking for a reliable, convenient contraceptive option."

Last week, the company announced positive data from two clinical trials of VEGF Trap-Eye, its new age-related macular degeneration therapy.
