NHS staff reminded to get immunised against flu

The government has issued a reminder to health workers that it is vital for them to receive vaccinations ahead of the 2012 influenza season.

Letters have been sent to NHS staff highlighting evidence on the importance of immunisation, while NHS Employers is coordinating a flu fighter campaign in partnership with the Department of Health, professional bodies and trade unions.

Estimates suggest that one in four healthcare workers may become infected during a mild influenza season, putting them at much greater risk than the general population.

Receiving a vaccination not only helps workers avoid spreading disease to their colleagues and family members, but it can also help to safeguard patients and improve the standard of care.

Director of nursing Viv Bennett said: "Flu can kill, so in leading by example and recognising the importance of having the flu vaccine yourself, you will help reinforce the benefits of immunisation and reassure people that it is safe and effective."

Figures from NHS Employers show that vaccination uptake in healthcare workers with direct patient care responsibilities increased from 35 percent in 2010/11 to 45 percent in 2011/12.
