Welch Allyn launches blood pressure-averaging technology

Welch Allyn has announced the launch of a unique, adaptable blood pressure-averaging technology to enhance the functionality of its Connex Vital Signs Monitor.

The Office Profile upgrade helps healthcare providers conduct more precise blood pressure measurement in patients than traditional devices by automatically taking several readings in succession, then calculating an average result.

It is thought that this technique can help to produce more accurate data by filtering out variations caused by minor factors, such as talking during the exam or placing the cuff over the patient's clothing.

Moreover, this method can also compensate for the so-called White Coat effect, which causes many patients to experience elevated blood pressure as a result of their tension within the clinical setting.

Shawn St Pierre, senior manager of vital signs marketing at Welch Allyn, said: "Even the most seemingly inconsequential factors can cause variability in systolic and diastolic blood pressure … Averaging multiple readings provides a more precise measurement that factors in these anomalies."

Earlier this month, the company announced the appointment of Joseph Hennigan as its new executive vice-president and chief financial officer.
