Medtronic reports positive data from one-year Symplicity trial

Medtronic has reported positive clinical data from Symplicity HTN-2, the first randomised clinical trial assessing the benefits offered by renal denervation technology.

The medical device firm's Symplicity renal denervation system was evaluated over a one-year period in the landmark study, results from which showed that the technology is able to deliver a significant drop in blood pressure compared to baseline.

No device-related serious adverse events, late vascular complications or significant declines in kidney function were reported at 12 months,while benefits were also observed among those in a control group who switched to using Symplicity after six months.

Dr Murray Esler, principal investigator of the Symplicity HTN-2 trial and senior director of the Baker IDI Heart and Diabetes Institute of Melbourne, said: "This data further substantiates the clinical benefits of renal denervation with Symplicity over longer periods of time in this difficult-to-treat patient group.”

This comes after Medtronic's new innovative new Sentrino continuous glucose management system was granted European regulatory approval earlier this month.
