Bayer HealthCare study shows need for adult female acne therapies
Bayer HealthCare has highlighted the need for dedicated therapies for adult female acne with a new European study.
Published in the Journal of the European Academy of Dermatology and Venereology, the report revealed that there are clear morphological differences between adolescent and adult female acne, meaning distinct treatments are required for each group.
Inflammatory lesions – such as papules, pustules and nodules – are more prominent than in teenage acne, which can affect the quality of life of the person affected.
It was also noted that several female characteristics need to be taken into account when choosing treatment, including the predisposition of mature skin to irritation, the likelihood that treatment response will be slow and the psychological impact of the condition.
Professor Dr Brigitte Dreno of the Hospital Hotel Dieu in France said: "To get satisfactory results, it is crucial to tailor the treatment to the specific needs of each individual woman. Otherwise, the suffering is unnecessarily prolonged."
Bayer HealthCare is the manufacturer of the Skinoren and Finacea acne therapies, which are marketed in around 80 countries and have been proven to be safe and effective in clinical studies.
