Biogen Idec reports positive multiple sclerosis trial data

Biogen Idec has announced primary efficacy analysis and safety data from a phase III trial of a new therapy for relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis (RRMS).

Results from the Advance study showed that peginterferon beta-1a was able to deliver significant reductions in annualised disease relapse rates, while the secondary endpoint of disability progression reduction was also met.

Peginterferon beta-1a is a new molecular entity in which interferon beta-1a is pegylated to extend its half-life and prolong its exposure in the body, meaning that patients will require a less frequent dosing schedule.

This data will help to support planned regulatory submissions for the new drug in the US and Europe this year.

Gilmore O'Neill, vice-president for global neurology late-stage clinical development at Biogen Idec, said: "Peginterferon beta-1a will represent an innovation that offers patients a less frequent dosing schedule of no more than 26 doses annually, as well as a significant reduction in relapses and disability progression."

This comes after the firm submitted its drug Tysabri for approval in an expanded indication for multiple sclerosis patients earlier this month.
