GlaxoSmithKline outlines commitment to Public Health Responsibility Deal
GlaxoSmithKline has provided details on its long-term commitment to delivering healthier consumer products under the government's Public Health Responsibility Deal.
The company has pledged to reduce the calorie and sugar content of its drinks portfolio over the coming year, with its popular Lucozade and Ribena brands set to be affected.
By the end of 2013, GlaxoSmithKline will cut calorie and sugar levels of 65 percent of the Lucozade Energy range by nine and eight percent respectively, while the sugar content of ready-to-drink Ribena products will fall by ten percent by 2014.
The firm will also continue to develop new, healthier options such as Ribena Plus with vitamin A and vitamin C, the nutrient-enriched Lucozade Revive and the low-calorie Lucozade Sport Lite.
A company statement said: "We believe it is important to inform people about the nutritional content of our products so that they can make informed choices."
The aim of the Public Health Responsibility Deal is to combat obesity, as 60 percent of adults and one-third of ten and 11-year-olds in England are classed as overweight or obese.
