Sanofi announces European approval for Lyxumia

Sanofi has announced its Lyxumia medication for the treatment of type 2 diabetes has been approved by the European Commission.

The multinational pharmaceuticals company will now provide the drug to patients living with the condition to achieve glycaemic control in combination with oral glucose-lowering medicinal products or insulin.

Based on results from the GetGoal clinical programme, the European Commission's decision to grant Marketing Authorisation in Europe for Lyxumia makes it the first once-daily GLP-1 receptor to be indicated for use on top of insulin and in combination with oral anti-diabetic medications.

Clinical trials investigating the safety and efficacy of the treatment found the drug demonstrated a pronounced post-prandial glucose lowering effect and a beneficial impact on body weight in adults with type 2 diabetes.

Pierre Chancel, senior vice-president of global diabetes at Sanofi, said: "With a single daily injection and only one step to maintenance dose, Lyxumia is a positive addition to the Sanofi portfolio."
